IM Norms for Pinoys

Here's a quick update from our Pinoy contributor, Mr Bernardino.

Eugene Torre booked a top 10 finish and three Filipinos gained IM norms in the just concluded 148 man–field 2nd San Marino International Chess Open.

Torre (ELO 2543), ended his ninth and final round match in a fighting draw against the top seeded GM Sergei Tiviakov (ELO 2669) of the Netherlands using the black pieces after 47 moves of an Owens Defense to score 6.5 points.

Wesley So, Darwin Laylo and Oliver Dimakiling earned IM norms. This was revealed yesterday by RP Turin Olympiad men’s head coach lawyer NM Samuel “Sammy” Estimo.

GM Vadim Milov of Switzerland, former winner of the Australian Open in 1999, was the overall winner of the event. He and GM Varuzhan Akobian scored 7.5 points, but the Swiss held the superior tiebreak.

Roland Salvador also earned an IM norm in the just concluded 2'FESTIVAL LODI-SV in Italy, by scoring 6/9 against opponents that averages 2337 in rating. He finishes with a 2460 performance which is more than enough for an IM norm.(2450).

Paragua will be also out of the top 100 comes the July rating list. He loses 13 points in Turin and another 8 points in San Marino, which might downgrade his SuperGM status (2600+) to 2596. The other five RP team members will gain rating points on the next FIDE list, Wesley So would be the greatest gainer with 18 point in Turin, 30 in Dubai Open and 47 in San Marino, together with the 2 IM norms! WESLEY SO YOURE THE MAN! ERR YOURE THE BOY!

Manila Bulletin reported that Rolando Nolte also get an IM norm, how come? Based on my computation he faced 9 opponents with an average rating of 2361 (Willem Sparrebom's rating was adjusted to 2100, granting that Nolte is eligible for the IM norm), he scored 5/9 to produce a 2401 rating performance which is way below the 2451 needed for the norm.IM norms were awarded also to Laylo,Dimakiling and So, but i think it was with So that matters most since it will only be his 2nd, and needed one more to complete the required number of norms for the elusive title.

You got it right the first time.
Wesley So is the man!
If he keeps going at this rate he could be a GM by the time he is 14.

We better invite him to the australian open before he becomes to famous...Leko played an australian open when he was 15.
